A prayer of the Athenians: Rain, Rain, O dear Zeus, upon the corn-land of the Athenians¹⁸ and their meads. Either pray not at all, or in this simple and frank fashion.

  Pausanias was a Greek travel writer of the 2nd century whose Description of Greece records the monuments he saw; at i. 24. 3 he describes a statue on the Athenian Acropolis of Earth praying to Zeus for rain.
