• 2.Died before 136. The grandfather of Marcus (§ 1) died aged nearly 90 in 138 (Capitolinus’s Life of Marcus vi. 1; Life of Pius iv. 2).

  The father is Marcus Annius Verus, who died while Marcus was a child; Haines gives only an outer limit for the date. The grandfather, also Marcus Annius Verus, is the “Grandfather Verus” of I.1. Capitolinus is one of the six purported authors of the Historia Augusta, a late-antique collection of Latin biographies of the emperors from Hadrian onward whose date and authorship are disputed; his lives of Marcus and of Antoninus Pius are Haines’s sources for the grandfather’s age and year of death.
